The Santa Catalina Convent was opened to the npublic in 1970, after 400 years of isolation. Hundreds of nuns lived here, in their own houses with servants and even little stables of guinea pigs. The few remaining nuns have retired to a closed off section. The streets and courtyards have been restored and repainted in the original mediteranean colors. It is the major sight in Arequipa.
